TSENG KWONG CHI @ The Grey Art Gallery

Combining photography with performance, personal identity with global politics, and satire with farce, Tseng Kwong Chi (1950–1990) created a compelling body of work whose complexity is belied by its humor and grace. Born in Hong Kong, raised in Vancouver, and educated in Paris, Tseng moved to New York in 1978, where he quickly became a key documentarian of Manhattan's vibrant downtown scene. He also began crafting the performative self-portraits—"selfies" avant la lettre—that form the backbone of his artistic practice, exploring the questions of personal and political identity that preoccupied many artists of his generation.

April 21 - July 11, 2015
@ The Grey Art Gallery | 100 Washington Square East
Featuring cutting-edge examples from Tseng’s archive that have rarely or never been shown, Tseng Kwong Chi: Performing for the Camera is the first major solo museum exhibition of his works, which have long sparked the imaginations of younger artists. Organized by the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Grey Art Gallery, NYU, the exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.

2014 Winter Jazzfest

"The NYC WINTER JAZZFEST turns 10 years old in 2014. In celebration of this milestone Winter Jazzfest is expanding to five nights from January 7th through January 11th. The festival will be presented in 9 different venues and will feature over 90 different groups including over 400 musicians. Winter Jazzfest upholds the continued mission to showcase top quality jazz to industry professionals, avid jazz fans, and new audiences.

Winter Jazzfest was established in 2005 with the goal of introducing underexposed artists – those that impacted the jazz scene of that period — to professional presenters attending the Arts Presenters Conference (APAP). At that time, jazz groups were underrepresented, although they were (and remain) culturally essential to the continued development and future of the music and audiences. Winter Jazzfest is pleased to continue our mission of offering a forum for presenters and music enthusiasts to experience and support the future of jazz."

The Parade will occur on Monday, November 11th, starting at approximately 11:25 am.  It will run until 3:30 pm, rain or shine.  The route runs along 5th Avenue, between 26th and 56th Streets.  Prior to the parade there will be a traditional opening ceremony at the Eternal Light Monument (5th Avenue @ 24th Street, next to Madison Square Park) beginning at 10:00 AM and concluding with a wreath laying at 11:00 AM. Seating is available at the opening ceremony, with preference given to disabled and elderly veterans.

Halloween in NYC

What did you do for Halloween?

Halloween in the US is a celebration for people of all ages!  Typical activities include trick or treating, pumpkin carving, and haunted houses.

Last week at Coffee Hour, we discussed different traditions around the world and watched clips from horror films.  Did you know that the tradition of Halloween has roots in the Gaelic ritual of Samhain?  A big thank you to the International Student Club for hosting this discussion!

So what did you do or learn this Halloween?  Hopefully some of you went to the Village Halloween Parade.  It is definitely a unique New York tradition that should not be missed!

Explore New York: Corona, Queens [Registration Required]
11:00 am  |  Meet in Lobby of Kimmel Center
Join Explore New York...Explore the World to get to know and taste Corona, Queens. Twenty years ago Corona was a tense neighborhood. Longtime Italian residents were unwelcoming and at times downright violent toward newly arriving Latino immigrants. Today older Italian men and younger Latinos banter in a mix of Italian, Spanish, and English over lemon ices and games of bocce. A newer Mexican restaurant offers Italian Special tamales with peppers and sausage as a nod to the generations old Italian markets around the corner. Still Corona is a complex neighborhood, but mixed into the challenges it faces, it has its charm: rich street life, great food and triumphs as newer immigrants make their way in New York City just as the Corona residents of old did. Sign up here.

Their website even has a CherryWatch Blossom Status Map.

I went this weekend and took photos, so here's a sneak peak of what you can see:
