Summer in the City

Hanging out in New York for the summer? Take advantage of the great weather and wealth of events to explore the city and surroundings.

NYU's Student Resource Center offers an extensive Summer Break Guide, as well as weekly newsletters starting in June. Here is just a sampling of events happening in New York City this summer.

Celebrate Brooklyn!

One of NYC's longest running, FREE, outdoor performing Arts festivals, Celebrate Brooklyn! launched in 1979 as a catalyst for a Brooklyn perfoming arts scene and to bring people back to Prospect Park after years of neglect. Enjoy music, film, spoken word, theater, and dance throughout the summer at the Prospect Park Bandshell. For a full list of summer performances, check out the Prospect Park Bandshell website.

Here is a selection of some upcoming shows:

Midsummer Night Swing

This is your night to dance. When Linconln Center's Damrosch Park turns into one big open-air ballroom, whether you're a seasoned dance-floor devotee or a complete newbie, Midsummer Night Swing has moves to show you, from Disco to vintage Swing, from Salsa and Calypso to Golden-Age Jazz.

Single Tickets: $17
Dance Floor Opens: 6:00 pm
Group Dance Lesson: 6:30-7:15 pm
Music and Dancing: 7:30-8:30 pm & 9:00-10:00 pm (live sets)

Shakespeare in the Park

The Public Theater's Free Shakespeare in the Park program is one of New York City's beloved summer traditions.

New York City Street Fairs

You will probably run into many of these on accident, but there is a full schedule for the summer on their website.
