Combining photography with performance, personal identity with global
politics, and satire with farce, Tseng Kwong Chi (1950–1990) created a
compelling body of work whose complexity is belied by its humor and
grace. Born in Hong Kong, raised in Vancouver, and educated in Paris,
Tseng moved to New York in 1978, where he quickly became a key
documentarian of Manhattan's vibrant downtown scene. He also began
crafting the performative self-portraits—"selfies" avant la lettre—that
form the backbone of his artistic practice, exploring the questions of
personal and political identity that preoccupied many artists of his
generation. Remarkably, Tseng made virtually all the works on view here
in the course of just ten years, before his untimely death from
AIDS–related complications at the age of 39.

ART & FILM
MoMA
Art Exhibition:
Film Exhibition:
Modern Mondays
*******
The MET
This
cross-medium selection of works, created in the past three decades by more than
30 international artists, represents a wide range of approaches to the
political, social, and cultural flux that have shaped the current global
landscape. Some of these artists use the lens of history—reflecting on past
events or centuries-old artistic traditions—as a means of assessing current
conditions. In Scene for a New Heritage, the project that lends the
exhibition its title, Croatian artist David Maljković uses an abandoned
socialist monument to imagine an alternate future, one informed by events of
the past but never realized. Other artists fight to stave off collective
amnesia through projects of commemoration; trace the crosscurrents of trade;
follow patterns of migration to swelling urban centers; or explore channels for
capturing, circulating, and distributing images in today’s highly digitized
society—from mobile phones to online platforms. Made under a diverse range of
geographic, political, social, and aesthetic circumstances, the works in the
exhibition propose one perspective on the Museum’s collection; seen alongside
one another, they allow for a reflection not only on their discrepancies,
differences, and contradictions, but also on their shared concerns.
Film Exhibition:
Modern Mondays
Where
is the cutting edge of the motion picture? Discover it first at MoMA. Building
upon the Museum's long tradition of exploring cinematic experimentation, Modern
Mondays is a showcase for innovation on screen. Engage with contemporary filmmakers
and moving image artists, and rediscover landmark works that changed the way we
experience film and media.

The
2015 centennial of the Department of Asian Art offers an ideal opportunity to
explore the history of the Museum's collection of Japanese art. Showcasing more
than two hundred masterworks of every medium, this exhibition tells the story
of how the Museum built its comprehensive collection of Japanese art beginning
in the early 1880s, when it owned just a small, eclectic array of Japanese
decorative arts.
