Join a weekend of collaboration and creativity — scientists, artists, designers, writers, and makers working together to bring their ideas to life!

Who should apply?

You’re an amateur or professional scientist with a strong idea but are finding it challenging designing a compelling Kickstarter project.

You’re an artist, designer, writer or maker who wants to use your skills to help bring a project to life in a field you love — science!

How will this work?

Scientists: Pitch your project idea in the form of a Kickstarter project draft. You can get started here. Make sure you fill out at least the project description, but the more information you provide, the better. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just a rough sketch of what you plan to do.

Designers, artists, writers, and makers: Sign up for the event on Eventbrite and include a short statement about what drives your excitement to participate, or a link to a project you love with a paragraph about why you love it. Bonus points for both!

We’ll get back to you with a list of projects that need collaborators. The event will be held at ITP. Food and beverages will be provided. Members of Kickstarter’s Outreach team will be available to guide the selected projects to launch, fulfillment and beyond!

 

Deadlines to apply: 

 

Scientists: 

Email your project preview link to science@kickstarter.com with the subject line SCIxKSR submission. Project drafts must be submitted by 10am EST Monday, January 26. Your acceptance will be confirmed by end of day Friday January 30.

Support towards travel and accommodation available for scientists based outside New York. If you require travel or accommodation support include a rough breakdown of your costs along with why support is needed in the Risks and challenges section of your project draft.

Designers, artists, writers, and makers: 

The Eventbrite will be open for signups until 10am EST Friday, February 20.

Photography: Record of Cherry Road

"The Department of Photography & Imaging presents Record of Cherry Road, an exhibition of photographs by alum Elizabeth Moran, recipient of the Department's 2013 Tierney Fellowship. Moran writes, "Record of Cherry Road investigates the myths that surround my family's home, the farmhouse of an old plantation in Memphis, Tennessee. Storied to be haunted, the house contains a multitude of histories that are ever-present yet hidden. With the help of my aunt and uncle, both paranormal investigators, the project seeks a presence that exists within familial lore... Documentation of paranormal activity from my mother's childhood, like a map of footsteps or a flash in a window, further conflate myth and history. Referencing spirit photography from the nineteenth century, when ectoplasm was made of cotton, and contemporary images of the paranormal, where chromatic aberrations are not just an artifact of a digital sensor, the project questions our continued reliance on photography to prove a belief." Photographs from Record of Cherry Road has been featured in the New York Times Lens Blog, BBC World News, Wired, Lenscratch, and Don/Dean."

Global Citizen: The Action Summit

An interactive symposium that focuses on the challenges to ending extreme poverty by 2030, featuring high-profile politicians and celebrities.

The Action Summit, an extension of the 2014 Global Citizen Festival held in Central Park, is an interactive symposium focused on the challenges to ending extreme poverty by 2030. Through a music and arts lens, The Summit will zero in on core policy issues - Access to Water & Sanitation, Vaccines, Global Education & Youth - and will feature true global representation at the highest level from country governments, celebrities, the private sector, and social entrepreneurs. Summit attendees will gather in participatory sessions alongside invited speakers to address core challenges around these issues.

Social in Practice: The Art of Collaboration

"Hosted by the Department of Photography & Imaging at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and The Nathan Cummings Foundation, Social in Practice: The Art of Collaboration is an innovative exhibition curated by Deborah Willis, University Professor and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging, and Hank Willis Thomas, Photography & Imaging alumnus, class of 1998.

Focused on the use of community collaboration and activism in art making, the multimedia exhibition features artists, collectives and organizations based in New York and around the world. All projects presented in the exhibition share themes of community building and social activism and depend on collaboration to achieve their impact. Through portraiture, documentary photography, audio-visual installations, personal narratives and community initiatives, Social in Practice: The Art of Collaboration reflects a wide span of individuals' pursuits to use art as a platform for greater conversation."

An alumnus of the Department, Ito is based in New York and currently works as a freelance photographer for The New York Times. The extraordinary growth of China and India over the past three decades, involving the two most populous countries in the world, has set in motion a process of social change that, in its scale and speed, is without parallel in recorded history. The roughly contemporaneous entry of China and India into a period of rapid capitalist growth and market consumption offers important questions for humanistic inquiry. This symposium seeks to engage in productive conversations from trans-Asian and trans-media perspectives, as well as investigate the historical conditions from which the reform-era cultural productions arise and cross borders of one kind of another.
