Pre-Professional Advising at CAS

The College of Arts and Science's Preprofessional Advising Center helps students who are thinking about law, the health professions (e.g., medicine, dentistry, etc.), business, or other professional training, to plan their education with these goals in mind and to decide how, when, and where to apply to professional school. Preprofessional advisors help students explore various professions, suggest related readings, provide statistical information about the probability of admission to selected schools, and assist with the application process. Co-curricular programs are also offered, including panels by professionals, resume writing and interviewing workshops, and internships.

______________________________________________________________

Attend an overview session:

Are you considering a health career? Would you like to talk about your plans with a preprofessional advisor? Join us for a prehealth overview! During these sessions, a member of the preprofessional advising staff will provide an overview of:
  • Prehealth academic requirements
  • Ways to develop your preprofessional portfolio and expand your extracurricular involvement
  • The application process for schools of the health professions

The session will be followed by a question and answer session so that you can get immediate responses to your prehealth questions.

A group overview will be your first touchpoint with our office and is a great opportunity to connect with other students in our prehealth community. The sessions will give you a foundation for what it means to be a prehealth student and will inform future individual meetings that you have with a member of our staff. Space at each overview session is limited, so reserve your seat as soon as possible.

Prehealth Orientation Sessions

Thinking About a Career in Health Care?

"Acceptance into a professional program – whether medicine, veterinary science, dentistry or allied health – requires more than just a strong academic performance in select science courses. A prehealth advisor can work with you to design a plan blending your career aspirations, undergraduate pursuits, and personal strengths so that you can succeed as a well-rounded candidate. We encourage you to inform yourself of the opportunities and demands of the healthcare field by reviewing this website and utilizing the resources and personalized advising available in the Preprofessional Advising Center.

Our email listserv will keep you up-to-date on volunteer opportunities, research positions, and community service projects. Le Clown de Cœur

CAS International Photo Contest Winner Series

Featured Photographer:
Liz Lorenz

Description:

"Le Clown de Cœur was taken in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a quartier on the left bank of Paris, shortly after Valentine's Day. Red paper hearts are still in the windows of a shop in the City of Love. Along with the nearby couple, the decorations reflect in the restaurant window-- the clown's lair. Captured from the outside of the café, his strange gesture and frozen, illegible expression are jarring compared to the lovely street scene. With their juxtaposition and the erie prominence of the clown's transparent figure, the image becomes fantastical and bizarre. Evoking the surreal reflections in the work of Paris based photographer Eugène Atget, Le Clown de Cœur explores various representations of and associations with the city where I feel most inspired."

Stop by the lounge at the CAS Advising Center in the Silver Building to see Liz's photo, as well as the other winners!

NYU Berlin Summer Course

Thanks to everyone who came to the coffee hour yesterday to talk about study away opportunities!  It was a great discussion and we look forward to seeing you all again in two weeks!

Study Away Highlight: NYU Berlin Summer

"At NYU Berlin students experience a cosmopolitan city that holds a complex and crucial place in modern European history. Youthful, artistic, and hip, Berlin has traveled a path that led from the defining cultural avant-garde of the Weimar Republic to the devastation of World War II, from a divided city symbolizing the Cold War to today’s reunified and renewed capital.

The program at NYU Berlin is designed for students in the social sciences and humanities who want to earn credit in their majors—including sociology, history, politics, studio art, environmental studies and European studies—while having a transformative experience abroad. Courses are taught in English, and German language courses are offered at all levels. Day trips and guided excursions in and around Berlin are included in the program."

Sample Course:
ART AND IDEAS: THE BERLIN BIENNIAL
Spend two weeks this Summer studying in Berlin at the Berlin Biennial.
This course will provide a backstage pass to one of the most important
events of the international art world in a city which has become
ground zero for contemporary art. Throughout the class, students will
visit key exhibitions, events, and cultural institutions; meet with
participating artists and curators; and examine and discuss the
artworks and ideas embedded within them.
**Offered through NYU Steinhardt
