GRINGO TRAILS is a feature-length documentary that raises urgent questions about one of the most powerful globalizing forces of our time: tourism. Spanning South America, Africa and Asia, the tourist pathway known as the “gringo trail” has facilitated both life-altering adventures and the despoiling of many once virgin environments. The film follows stories along the trail to reveal the complex relationships between colliding cultures: host countries hungry for financial security and the tourists who provide it in their quest for authentic experiences. Film Exhibition: Chinese Realities/Documentary Visions

Chinese Realities/Documentary Visions

May 8-June 1, 2013 | MoMA

Amid China's epochal transformations over the last two decades, new documentary aesthetics emerged, as the overwhelming cultural and societal challenges caused by China's transition to a free-market economy compelled professional and amateur filmmakers alike to capture new realities on screen.Working largely outside the state media apparatus, pioneer filmmakers provided bracing alternative visions of both society and filmmaking, with an ethos based on direct observation of reality and uncensored personal expression. The proliferation of the "reality aesthetic" has led to more complex notions of what reality means and how it is represented.

[Event] Media & Asian Globalization: China and India, 1977-Present

Friday, March 29, 2013 | 2:15-7:30 pm
Saturday, March 30, 2013 | 9:15 am-4:45 pm
Michelson Theater, 721 Broadway, 6th Floor

The extraordinary growth of China and India over the past three decades, involving the two most populous countries in the world, has set in motion a process of social change that, in its scale and speed, is without parallel in recorded history. The roughly contemporaneous entry of China and India into a period of rapid capitalist growth and market consumption offers important questions for humanistic inquiry. This symposium seeks to engage in productive conversations from trans-Asian and trans-media perspectives, as well as investigate the historical conditions from which the reform-era cultural productions arise and cross borders of one kind of another.

Cosponsored by Global Research Initiatives, NYU Provost; Cinema Studies, Tisch School of the Arts; The Humanities Initiative at NYU; Department of Media, Culture and Communication, NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development.
