Mandatory Check-In Session

September 18 All Day Silver Center for Arts and Science, Room 408 

The US government requires all new international students to report their arrival to NYU. To report your arrival, you must attend a check-in session with as soon as possible once you arrive to the US.
Click here to sign up and learn when and where the workshop takes place, we offer multiple sessions in one day. If you are returning from a leave of absence, the workshop is not mandatory but you are still welcome to attend. 

Note that failure to attend a check-in workshop may jeopardize your ability to remain legally in the US.

Optional Practical Training for F-1 Students 
(Pre OPT and Post OPT)


September 18 10:00am - 11:30am EDT Kimmel Center for University Life, Room 905/907

How do I work off-campus before graduation? How can I work in the U.S. after I graduate? Optional Practical Training is one way to do both! 

An NYU Office of Global Services international student advisor will explain the rules and types of Optional Practical Training (OPT), the most popular type of off-campus employment for F-1 students.Learn about how to apply and the documents needed to ensure you’re able to work when you land that job, too.  Application materials will be provided.

U.S. tax obligations, STEM OPT and Cap Gap OPT extensions will also be briefly discussed.  
Seating is limited. The RSVP is only for reminder purposes. Latecomers are welcome as space allows.

F-1 Work Options Before Graduation (CPT and Pre-OPT)

September 21 4:00pm - 6:00pm EDT Kimmel Center for University Life, room 405/406 

Learn about F-1 work options available before graduation.
 
An NYU Office of Global Services international student adviser will explain the difference between the two most common types of employment for F-1 students. Learn about how to apply for Curricular Practical Training and Pre-Completion Optional Practical Training. Application materials will be provided.  
 
It is ideal to attend this workshop before interviewing for jobs and one semester prior to starting employment. 
 
Attention new students: Most F-1 students in the U.S. for the first time are eligible to work off-campus after two semesters has passed.

On-Campus Employment for F-1 and J-1 Students

Overview of what is needed to work on-campus and how to find work on-campus:

What are the documents you need to work on campus as an F-1 or J-1 student? What about Social Security cards? Learn the answers to these questions and receive a glossary of words to know as you look for work on-campus.

A representative from the Wasserman Center for Career Development and an advisor from the Office of Global Services will co-present this session.

  1. While doing corporate event planning, decide how much time to spend on Office activities and when it would be best to do them. If the activity is to be part of a team meeting, plan it for the appropriate spot on the specific meeting agenda.
