Glossary

We know there are a lot of offices, opportunities, and acronyms thrown around by students and staff, alike. If you ever find yourself wondering what they are talking about, here's a quick reference of words and terms about common to NYU and NYC.

CAS: College of Arts and Science.
Classes: Online platform for individual courses. Professors may post assignments, readings, documents, or ask for students to submit work or posts online. Access your NYU Classes from NYU Home, under Academics.
CMEP: Center for Multicultural Education and Programs, located in the Kimmel Center, Room #806.
CSALS: Center for Student Activities, Leadership, and Service, located in the Kimmel Center.
FiDi: Financial District of New York City.
Gallatin: A school for individualized studies at NYU, where students design an interdisciplinary program.
GCASL: [pronounced G-Castle] Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life.
HPO: Health Promotion Office, located in the Student Health Center, 3rd Floor.
IGD: Intergroup Dialogue. A 1-credit course for undergraduate students offered by CMEP. Students discuss a specific social identity in depth and through honest conversations facilitiated by graduate students.
LES: Lower East Side. Area of New York City to the southeast of NYU.
MAP: Morse Academic Plan. The core curriculum for NYU undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Science. Includes Foreign Language, Expository Writing, Natural Sciences, Qunatitative Reasoning, Texts & Ideas, Cultures & Contexts, Expressive Cultures, and Societies & Social Sciences.
NYU Home: The portal for students (along with staff and faculty) to access their personal information relating to their time at NYU. Includes access to academics, student life, health center messages, NYU e-mail and calendar, bursar, and financial aid. Login at http://home.nyu.edu.
OCR: On-Campus Recruitment. A program provided by The Wasserman Center in which graduating students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, can particpate in interviews with companies and organizations that come directly to NYU.
OGS: Office of Global Services [formerly OISS].
OISS: Office of International Students and Scholars [now OGS]
SCPS: School for Continuing and Professional Studies.
