“Coolie” Diaspora: From Indentureship to Transnational Communities

Brought to you by the Asian/Pacific/American Institute and the Center for Multicultural Education & Programs

"Two groundbreaking works on the history of indentured labor and the Asian diaspora in the Caribbean come into conversation with one another. In Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture (University of Chicago Press, 2013), Gaiutra Bahadur traces the story of her great-grandmother, who in 1903 journeyed from India to Guyana and, through the excavation of countless colonial archives, reveals the complex lives of a quarter of a million other “coolie women” like her. Pankaj Mishra writes that Coolie Woman, “shows, with understated literary power, the bitterly paradoxical nature of colonial modernity: the unbearable dialectic between enslavement and liberation that many unsung millions underwent in their private lives.”

Kathleen López’s Chinese Cubans: A Transnational History (University of North Carolina Press, 2013) explores the transition of the Chinese from indentured to free migrants and the formation of transnational communities. López demonstrates how Chinese migration, intermarriage, and assimilation are central to Cuban history and national identity during a key period of transition from slave to wage labor and from colony to nation. Praised by Evelyn Hu-Dehart as, “[m]eticulously researched and beautifully written…this is the first serious and comprehensive history of the Chinese in Cuba.”

Sukhdev Sandhu (Department of Social & Cultural Analysis) moderates."

America's Parade

Veteran's Day: NYC

New York City's Veterans Day Parade continues its tradition as the largest celebration of service in the country.  Veterans Day is an unofficial US holiday that honors all men and women who have served in the armed forces.

The Parade will occur on Monday, November 11th, starting at approximately 11:25 am.  It will run until 3:30 pm, rain or shine.  The route runs along 5th Avenue, between 26th and 56th Streets.  Prior to the parade there will be a traditional opening ceremony at the Eternal Light Monument (5th Avenue @ 24th Street, next to Madison Square Park) beginning at 10:00 AM and concluding with a wreath laying at 11:00 AM. Seating is available at the opening ceremony, with preference given to disabled and elderly veterans.

Join the NYU Military Alliance, NYU Students in the Military, and other veterans in marching in the 2013 New York City Veterans Day Parade.  A gathering location will be sent prior to the event to those who register.  You can register online here.  If possible, wear NYU gear for the event.

International Student Coffee Hour TODAY!

This week’s Coffee Hour will cover accelerated Bachelor’s/Master’s programs offered by CAS in conjunction with GSAS, Steinhardt and Wagner. Our CAS Advising colleague Scott Statland -- Associate Director of Juniors, Cross-School Minors, and Bachelor's/Master's Programs – will join us for the discussion. These accelerated programs present an amazing opportunity to complete graduate-level coursework in a timely and cost-effective manner. Having a master’s degree can help in many ways, including by providing for enhanced employment opportunities, by strengthening applications for further graduate work, and by fostering intellectual enrichment in a student’s field of study. Halloween in NYC

What did you do for Halloween?

Halloween in the US is a celebration for people of all ages!  Typical activities include trick or treating, pumpkin carving, and haunted houses.

Last week at Coffee Hour, we discussed different traditions around the world and watched clips from horror films.  Did you know that the tradition of Halloween has roots in the Gaelic ritual of Samhain?  A big thank you to the International Student Club for hosting this discussion!

So what did you do or learn this Halloween?  Hopefully some of you went to the Village Halloween Parade.  It is definitely a unique New York tradition that should not be missed!
