Thanksgiving is a US holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.  This year it is quite late, falling on the 28th.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a New York tradition.  You can watch the procession all day on TV or go to the public viewing areas along the route (www.macys.com/parade).

"This workshop is open to any NYU international students and alumni with an arts background, who is seeking options to stay in the U.S. beyond their F-1 or J-1 status ends.  An immigration law firm will discuss the criteria to be eligible as an artist as well as hold a question and answer period. Come and learn as it may not be as daunting as you think."

 Performances (directly following the Vigil) from groups within the University. All proceeds from ticket sales and donations from the event will go directly to relief efforts. Tickets can be purchased and/or donations can be made at the Skirball Center Box Office or online at Ticket Central.

Graduate School Series

CAS International Student Coffee Hour

This week’s Coffee Hour will commence our Graduate School Series with a discussion of Arts & Humanities graduate degrees. We will guests holding graduate degrees (MA, MFA, PHD) in fields like Art History, Creative Writing, Film and History. Come with questions about preparing your candidacy and the application process, life as an arts/humanities graduate student, and life after school. During the spring semester, we will continue this series with presentations on graduate school in Math/Sciences and in the Social Sciences. Stay tuned.

Also, mark your calendars for a special Coffee Hour to be held on Thursday, December 5 at the NYU Grey Art Gallery. We will be doing a tour of the acclaimed current exhibit – Modern Art in Iran (in collaboration with the Asia Society). Refer to these links to learn more:

“Coolie” Diaspora: From Indentureship to Transnational Communities

"Two groundbreaking works on the history of indentured labor and the Asian diaspora in the Caribbean come into conversation with one another. In Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture (University of Chicago Press, 2013), Gaiutra Bahadur traces the story of her great-grandmother, who in 1903 journeyed from India to Guyana and, through the excavation of countless colonial archives, reveals the complex lives of a quarter of a million other “coolie women” like her. Pankaj Mishra writes that Coolie Woman, “shows, with understated literary power, the bitterly paradoxical nature of colonial modernity: the unbearable dialectic between enslavement and liberation that many unsung millions underwent in their private lives.” 

Kathleen López’s Chinese Cubans: A Transnational History (University of North Carolina Press, 2013) explores the transition of the Chinese from indentured to free migrants and the formation of transnational communities. López demonstrates how Chinese migration, intermarriage, and assimilation are central to Cuban history and national identity during a key period of transition from slave to wage labor and from colony to nation. Praised by Evelyn Hu-Dehart as, “[m]eticulously researched and beautifully written…this is the first serious and comprehensive history of the Chinese in Cuba.”
