Academics

CAS Advising

CAS students have a wealth of support and resources on the 9th Floor of the Silver Center, such as walk-in appointments, Dean Kalb's Office, Pre-Professional Advising, and CAS Counseling. Walk-in appointments are available from 10:00 am-4:00 pm, Monday-Friday (ending at 2:00 pm on Wednesdays), or you can make an appointment with your full-time advisor. Students who have declared a major should have a full-time advisor in their department. Have a quick question? Contact the Virtual Advisor: casvirtualadvisor@nyu.edu.

While CAS Advising is available for guidance and forms, the website is also a great place to find further information:

College Core Curriculum, aka, the Morse Academic Plan (MAP)

The College Core Curriculum is the group of core courses in the liberal arts for undergraduates at NYU. For students in CAS, these courses create a broad foundation on which you build your chosen field of study, your major. The College Core Curriculum is composed of four sections: Expository Writing, Foreign Language Study, Foundations of Scientific Inquiry (FSI), and Foundations of Contemporary Culture (FCC), with a variety of courses to choose from in each area. Students must fulfill requirements in:

Expository Writing Foreign Language (Intermediate II)
Quantitative Reasoning Natural Science I & II
Texts & Ideas Cultures & Contexts
Societies & Social Science Expressive Culture

Preprofessional Advising

The College's Preprofessional Advising Center (Silver Center, 901) helps students who are thinking about law, the health professions (e.g., medicine, dentistry, etc.), and to decide how, when, and where to apply to professional school. Preprofessional advisors help students explore various professions, suggest related readings, provide statistical information about the probability of admission to selected schools, and assist with the application process. Co-curricular programs are also offered, including panels by professionals, resume writing and interviewing workshops, and internships.

Learning Resources

NYU and CAS strive to provide support and resources to all students in order to set them up for a successful academic career. Successful people know what they don't know and they use all the resources they can find to get the guidance and answers they need. Here are some resources to enhance the learning experience (and are free to students).

University Learning Centers

The University Learning Center's  mission is to assist students in developing the knowledge base, skills, and strategies that will help them to become confident, independent, and active learners. Its various academic support services are intended to help students meet the challenge of NYU's rigorous academic standards. At these locations students can find Peer Tutoring, Group Review Sessions and Study Slams, Academic Coaching and Skills Workshops, Cross-School Advising, and some quiet (and louder) study spaces and even some programming specifically for international students. These targeted opportunities are part of the English Language Support projects, including Conversation Circles, Writing Review, and the Freshman Honors Seminar Writing Groups for International Students.

There are two locations of the University Learning Centers, each offering a variety of resources tailored to the students and community.

The Writing Center

Located at 411 Lafayette, the Writing Center is staffed with consultants who are studying for or already hold advanced degrees, and many are even published writers. Students come to the Writing Cneter to work with consultants at every stage of the wriitng process and on any piece of writing (except for exams). The Writing Center is primarily available only by appointment, and slots fill up quickly, so plan ahead for mid-terms and finals. You may schedule up to one appointment per week, using the online appointment system. If you have further questions, or do not have an appointment, you may go for a walk-in session, but you are not guaranteed to be seen. For more information, go to their website. For questions, call 212-998-8866.

Henry & Lucy Moses Center for Students with Disabilities

Located at 726 Broadway, 2nd Floor, the Moses Center (CSD) determines qualified disability status and assists students in obtaining appropriate accommodations and services. The Moses Center operates according to an "Independent Living Philosophy", and strives in its policies and practices to empower each student to become as independent as possible. Our services are designed to encourage independence, backed by a strong system of supports. For questions, feel free to contact the Center at mosescsd@nyu.edu or 212-995-4114.

Bobst Library

One of the largest open-stack libraries in the nation, with more than 2.5 million volumes, Bobst is a critical resource for all NYU students. In addition to books, journals, and other print materials, the library provides access to many non-print resources, including microfilms, computerized databases and other electronic information, extensive video and audio collections, a language laboratory, and computer equipment and software programs. Most materials are accessible through BobCat, its on-line catalog, which also lists materials at a number of affiliated libraries. Library orientation sessions, which provide an introduction to BobCat, the journal collection, and index services, are held each semester, as well as workshops on research strategies and the Internet. These are incredibly helpful classes, and free to students. Check out the Schedule of Library Instruction Classes. Bobst also has a staff ready and eager to support students in navigating the library and their research, including topic-specific librarians. Find your Subject Librarian  online to schedule an appointment, or peruse the in-depth online subject resource guides. For general questions, you can always Ask a Librarian.

NYU Bookstore

The NYU Bookstore, located at 726 Broadway, is a place to not only pick up all of your textbooks, but a site to get school supplies, NYU gear, and perhaps even some books for fun reading. There is a Think Coffee Shop inside the store, where you can peruse your books while taking a breather.

There is also an NYU Computer Store, located at 242 Greene Street, that can provide discounted technology and programs to students. For more information, stop by or see their website.

Undergraduate Research

By participating in research projects under faculty supervision, students develop a set of skills which will prepare them for success in any profession or career--the ability to ask the right questions, to develop strategies for answering them, to think critically, to organize data into a coherent interpretation and to communicate results effectively both orally and in writing.

ITS is NYU's central organization for technology-based services, providing a wide variety of IT services and resources to the community, including e-mail, Internet access, printing, and a number of communication and collaboration resources, just to name a few. Students can access these services through their own computers, at the ITS computer labs, or at the University Learning Centers. Albert

Albert is NYU's online student information system, and can be accessed on NYUHome, under the Academics section. This site is where you can add and drop classes (during valid times), apply for graduation, and gain access to your Bursar and Financial Aid accounts. To login directly, go to http://home.nyu.edu. If you are having trouble accessing Albert, try the guidelines offered by the Registrar.

The NYU Classes online learning system enables NYU faculty to use the Web to enhance classroom instruction. Instructors can use NYU Classes to create full-featured, online course environments for the members of their class to provide content sharing, collaborative capabilities, assignment and other assessment tools, as well as Gradebook functionality. Students can use NYU Classes to connect with their peers and stay on track with assignments and due dates with an aggregated calendar for all of their courses.

To access your NYU Classes, login to your NYUHome and look under the Academics tab.

New to NYU Classes? Check out the Video Tutorials.

*NYU is in the process of transitioning from the NYU Blackboard learning management system to NYU Classes. By the beginning of the Spring 2013 term, the College of Arts and Science courses should all have completed the transition.
